  1. 0:00 Hey y'all.
  2. 0:01 Um, today I want to talk about sports betting, um, the kind of evolution and the risks um that we've seen in society today.
  3. 0:09 Uh so sports betting essentially just started as um under the table betting on sporting events, uh like horse racing, baseball, and it was really shady.
  4. 0:20 I mean, you got notorious cases of the people fixing the world series, people fixing horse races.
  5. 0:25 Um, and thankfully, I think sports fixing has has kind of died down in the United States as sports betting has become legalized, uh became legal in Vegas, and then in 2018, I'm pretty sure the US government made it legal for states to decide if they wanted to have sports betting, and I think now it's legal in about 35 states.
  6. 0:46 Um, and most of the sports betting occurs on apps like FanDuel, um DraftKings, Bet MGM.
  7. 0:55 But although there is legalized sports betting, I think there is still a pretty shady side of it.
  8. 1:00 Um there's ways for kids underage to sports bet.
  9. 1:04 Um, there's online books, um, online bookies, people who run shady books, um, and it gets kids in a lot of trouble, you know.
  10. 1:11 They make poor decisions sports betting, they get addicted, they win a bet, and then they start going down heavily.
  11. 1:17 Um, and there's nothing they can really do about it.
  12. 1:20 And it's it's really just a dopamine addiction that can turn bad really fast.
  13. 1:25 Um, if you're betting illegally, I mean, one you're doing something illegal, and if you lose a lot of money, then you're doing something you're not supposed to do, and you're losing money.
  14. 1:33 So I think it's a really big problem in our day and age.
  15. 1:36 I think the fact that it's been so normalized, like you go on ESPN, and there's always like these parlays they put up there.
  16. 1:42 There's sports lines are super important in the sports world now.
  17. 1:46 And yeah, it's been a thing for a while, it's been shady for a while, but back then it was more like people who really wanted to bet had to go out of their way to go bet.
  18. 1:57 Nowadays it's just it's in your face, and it's such a big economy.
  19. 2:00 I think I read somewhere it's like over 120 billion dollar industry, and that's just the legal side of things.
  20. 2:06 Um, so I think it's it's an important topic so that we should look into more as a as a society.
  21. 2:13 Um yeah, sports betting can be fun, but it is dangerous, and at the end of the day, it is illegal to do it under age.
  22. 2:22 Um, and there's a reason why there's certain measures put in place up until now, but I think it's kind of gotten out of hand recently, and uh something should be done about it.
