Social media for young people

Claims and stances

Transcript

  1. 0:00 So today I just wanted to talk a little bit about um social media and especially how much it's grown over the past ten years.
  2. 0:08 Um and I really wanted to talk about like young people using social media.
  3. 0:12 Um I'm talking under the age of 15 years old.
  4. 0:15 Um because more and more parents are letting their kids do that.
  5. 0:18 Um just because it's so normalized.
  6. 0:20 It's used to communicate, which is a great thing.
  7. 0:22 I mean, social media has so many benefits, um, and it's it's such a great tool.
  8. 0:27 However, I do just want to say, talk about some of the dangers of young people using um these platforms, um, such as Instagram, TikTok, all of those kinds of things.
  9. 0:37 Not only are you exposed to potentially, you know, content you just haven't seen before in your life, especially at those young ages, um, you know, people talking about things that you're not you've never really heard of.
  10. 0:47 But um it can be very dangerous if if someone gets so hooked into social media at that young of an age to where they kind of base their whole identity around those apps.
  11. 0:57 Um that's where they get validation for things they do, you know, who they're with.
  12. 1:01 Um, and that can be a very dangerous line of thinking.
  13. 1:05 Um and I'm a strong believer that some social media is one of the driving, you know, influences on why you see suicide rates are higher now than they've ever been and mental health and stuff like that, just because it's so much comparison, um, it's so much divide between ideas, which is a good thing, but at young ages being exposed to that can lead you down a very dangerous path.
  14. 1:27 Um so I do feel like there should be some sort of regulation as to, you know, at what age can you use the social media, or maybe even if you have it, at what age can you be the one to put content out there?
  15. 1:40 Um, or like what content can you yourself, you know, expose be exposed to.
  16. 1:46 Um and a hard large part of that is responsibility of the parents, you know, to kind of monitor what their kids are doing, what content they're taking in.
  17. 1:53 But you know, sometimes when parents aren't as active in their kids' lives and invested in their kids' lives, those kids are the ones who you know take in that media at younger ages and are exposed to some of those dangerous things.
