  1. 0:00 How's it going, everybody?
  2. 0:02 I just want to talk about the elephant in the classroom, Chad GPT.
  3. 0:06 So I think it's an amazing tool when it's used right.
  4. 0:09 But as we can see in Georgia Tech, a lot of teachers are adjusting their curriculum and syllabuses accordingly to limit the use of Chad GPT, and I was curious as to why.
  5. 0:24 So research shows that there is a strong negative link between AI and AI use and critical thinking, especially for students between 17 to 25.
  6. 0:35 One study found that the correlation between AI tool usage and critical thinking was negative 0.68.
  7. 0:42 And between cognitive offloading, which is outsourcing your thinking to AI, is even stronger at negative 0.75.
  8. 0:50 Another MIT led experiment showed that when students use AI to help write essays, their brains engage much less and they actually retain less of what they learn.
  9. 1:01 So in the UK and across many other countries, 92% of undergrads now use AI, whereas only 66% did before.
  10. 1:10 The jump is crit is is huge and it's it's raising alarms as to whether or not we need to regulate this in the classroom, especially for the younger generations.
  11. 1:20 I don't think AI is bad, but there's definitely um room to implement it into the classroom.
  12. 1:29 So teachers are already using it to create their lessons, make lesson plans, and customize study materials.
  13. 1:35 So this helps them free up more time to discuss and talk more, which is good for students.
  14. 1:41 The key in AI use in the classroom is just balancing it.
  15. 1:45 Students, the teachers need to help students know when and how to use it and make sure they disclose if they did.
  16. 2:10 So in conclusion, yeah, AI is a game changer, but only if it's a tool and not a substitute for thinking.
  17. 2:18 By teaching students the right way, we can prepare students for a future where AI can exist while still keeping the critical thinking skills that are necessary.
  18. 2:27 Thanks for listening.
