Avery Watts0:00 How's it going, everybody?0:02 I just want to talk about the elephant in the classroom, Chad GPT.0:06 So I think it's an amazing tool when it's used right.0:09 But as we can see in Georgia Tech, a lot of teachers are adjusting their curriculum and syllabuses accordingly to limit the use of Chad GPT, and I was curious as to why.0:24 So research shows that there is a strong negative link between AI and AI use and critical thinking, especially for students between 17 to 25.0:35 One study found that the correlation between AI tool usage and critical thinking was negative 0.68.0:42 And between cognitive offloading, which is outsourcing your thinking to AI, is even stronger at negative 0.75.0:50 Another MIT led experiment showed that when students use AI to help write essays, their brains engage much less and they actually retain less of what they learn.1:01 So in the UK and across many other countries, 92% of undergrads now use AI, whereas only 66% did before.1:10 The jump is crit is is huge and it's it's raising alarms as to whether or not we need to regulate this in the classroom, especially for the younger generations.1:20 I don't think AI is bad, but there's definitely um room to implement it into the classroom.1:29 So teachers are already using it to create their lessons, make lesson plans, and customize study materials.1:35 So this helps them free up more time to discuss and talk more, which is good for students.1:41 The key in AI use in the classroom is just balancing it.1:45 Students, the teachers need to help students know when and how to use it and make sure they disclose if they did.2:10 So in conclusion, yeah, AI is a game changer, but only if it's a tool and not a substitute for thinking.2:18 By teaching students the right way, we can prepare students for a future where AI can exist while still keeping the critical thinking skills that are necessary.2:27 Thanks for listening.
Connor Mcilhinney0:00 I agree that AI in the classroom is a hot topic discussion that needs to be addressed pretty urgently just because of, like you said, Avery, where brain activation is shown to be decreasing at an alarming rate through the studies that you mentioned.0:14 And I think this is happening more so because students are no longer using these AI models as kind of a glorified Google or glorified search engine.0:23 But rather they're plugging and shugging uh entire problems, entire like homework sets into these models, and then just kind of copying pasting the answer.0:31 Where it's no longer saying, like, oh, I don't remember this formula, ChatGPT, what is this formula, and then using your own brain to kind of piece together where this formula should be applied.0:40 It's now ChatGPT, this is my entire problem.0:43 Show me what numbers write down, and I'll just write down those numbers.0:47 I think it's fine in some cases, like you mentioned with teachers, where if you're using it to make homework sets or make problems or perform these tasks, but I agree, I think the main reason for this brain deactivation is due to kids just really plugging and shugging at a large scale and copying down.
Peter Durham0:00 Great discussion, Avery.0:01 I do think AI is being used more and more.0:04 Um, especially in the classroom.0:07 A lot of my classes, AI is encouraged.0:10 Um, the teachers try to help you learn how to use Chat GPT correctly.0:16 Um But yeah, with a lot of um college age students using AI incorrectly and it's it's causing a a big decrease in critical thinking.0:29 Not actu uh a lot of students are not actually learning through Chat GPT, they're just letting Chat GPT do all the work for them.0:38 Um which is a big issue.
Marshall Lisenby0:00 Avery, this is a very um relevant topic and it's very pertinent too.0:03 I think AI is coming to consume kind of the minds of the youth in the classroom.0:07 Um I've witnessed this witness it myself on the in recent years, any anytime any sort of assignment that involves any sort of critical thinking or any sort of leap to be made mentally, uh I see many students to go straight to AI, type it in and plug in the answer, and there's no process of learning going on at all.0:24 Uh however, the grades and you know the points are still being maintained by these students.0:29 So it's a very dangerous, troubling situation because education is no longer occurring in the same way that it used to.0:34 Now everybody's um using AI to do the work for them to get their points, but learning nothing and gang gaining nothing from the process.0:41 And I think with the way that AI is um rapidly advancing so much, the technology is only getting better, the capabilities are only getting stronger, and it's gonna get to a point where uh it can pretty much do anything and be undetectable.0:52 Uh uh and that's a very um hair-winked thought when you think about education because people are really losing the points about what they're supposed to be doing, um, being learning.0:59 Um, and it's really taking away from that as um kind of uh the stress of trying to succeed in an overly competitive society pushes students to sacrifice the actual benefit of benefit of learning to by through using AI uh to get the better job, the better grades, the better education the better school to get into at their own uh deficit at the end of the day.
Graham Forgey0:00 I completely agree with what Avery is saying about the use of ChatGPT.0:04 As a George Sec student myself, I see that many students are beginning to lose that skill of critical thinking and thinking about hard problems on their own.0:16 Instead, they use Chat GPT as a crutch in order to help them get through tough problems instead of actually doing it themselves.0:25 I've seen this firsthand in classes such as computer science, where problems are not always straightforward.0:32 Many students use AI to help them where critical thinking would have normally happened.0:40 I myself do not use AI and I do not believe in it, but I I started to see as well that teachers are actually becoming to think of this or just allow it because it's going to happen either way.0:52 We should put a stop to ChatGPT as it is hurting this our students' brains.
