  1. 0:00 So I'm just sitting here watching Netflix.
  2. 0:02 Um I'm watching a show called Black Mirror, and it's about kind of technology being used in negative ways.
  3. 0:08 So I really wanted to dive into how technology is kind of negatively impacting our lives and maybe whether or not it needs to be regulated in the future.
  4. 0:17 I mean, as a student, I know a lot of other students are using AI for their homework and for classwork, and it's kind of minimizing what it means to get a degree in college.
  5. 0:27 And I know that a lot of us are on our phones way too much, and for me especially, like sometimes I want to do things and study and um excel professionally, but I'm stuck scrolling on my phone.
  6. 0:43 And so I think this is an important topic because, you know, there's a lot of things that AI and technology as a whole and social media can do that's pretty negative on ourselves.
  7. 0:53 Like for example, um young young people are starting to develop negative body images, you know, comparing themselves to other people.
  8. 1:01 Like for example, I'm looking I I just want to do a little research, so I'm looking at this review online.
  9. 1:06 Um in 2022, um image-based social media platforms like Instagram have a stronger association with negative body image, and I think that's really important because um even some of my friends have studied with bot or struggled with body image, and it's just like it's something that we probably need to discuss more and have some regulations on, you know, how technology is going to succeed and um continue in our lives because it's it's developing incredibly fast and you know there's not many regulations in place now, so

  1. 0:00 Hey Gaines, I think you make some some really interesting points.
  2. 0:02 Uh specifically, I found your comment about how Chat GPT and other LLMs really minimizes what it means to have a a bachelor's degree in this day and age.
  3. 0:12 Um I know that if you like look at the usage uh of the traffic to ChatGPT's site, um it's down a lot throughout the summer and then it spikes right back up when school starts.
  4. 0:23 Uh and I think that's super interesting just because it like very clearly states that the main use of Chat GPT right now is students kind of just plugging and chugging their own homework in.
  5. 0:35 Um I think it's also very clear that employers are taking note of this and kind of understanding that you know someone who graduates with a computer science degree in in 2025 is most likely gonna be less skilled than somebody from ten years ago, just because ten years ago it was almost it it was more employers are more certain that you were doing your own schoolwork.

Carl Dagher

  1. 0:00 Yeah, Gaines.
  2. 0:01 Uh this is this is really relatable to me too.
  3. 0:04 Um I think the biggest issue with technology recently is um the lack of attention.
  4. 0:10 I feel like I find myself personally, I try to be good about not being on my phone, but I find myself having uh a shorter attention span and um I definitely credit that to all the scrolling you see like that short form media kinda just captures your attention and and you just keep wanting more and more and I think that's horrible for the brain.
  5. 0:28 Um and I hope in the future there's a way we can move away from that.
  6. 0:33 Uh like you said, AI is making things almost too easy.
  7. 0:36 There's no thought process behind many of our uh schoolwork assignments, so I think it's gonna be an uh it's it's gonna be a serious issue down the line.
  8. 0:45 Um a lack of critical thinking um in in the younger generation and a lack of attention span which will only cause problems for us down the line and and as technology expands our our our intelligence seems to be decreasing, which is which is not not ideal, but I think I think as humanity we'll find a way around this.
  9. 1:05 Um we'll find some regulations or something um to kinda to kinda keep up with uh with uh with the modernization of the world and you know, just keep our intelligence growing.
  10. 1:16 But I mean yeah, personally I've I've experienced some some shortfalls of technology, even though it's uh it's a largely effective aspect of our life.
