Gaines Gunn0:00 What's up, guys?0:01 Today I want to talk about a really important topic.0:03 Um, I think this topic is something that's kind of come into light again, um, especially with Jimmy Kimmel getting pulled off of his show by Disney Um for saying some stuff about Charlie Kirk and his assassination.0:14 And kind of the question I pose is like whether censorship is right and just.0:19 Um, I feel like a lot of buzzwords are thrown out um regarding like media reporting and information on social media and in the media, and it's you know, misinformation and misleading information, and I think these words can be a little bit dangerous.0:35 Um I think that you know, we we see Donald Trump, he was banned on Twitter, he was banned on Snapchat, Instagram.0:42 Literally, well, I don't know, he may have been unbanned on Instagram.0:45 But the thing the point of the matter is, um Trump claims that people banned him and silenced him as a way to hurt his campaign for presidency and to silence a competitor.0:58 Um, whereas other people say that he was inciting violence and spreading misinformation.1:02 So I think it's really important, you know, whether or not censorship is something that should be in our media and something that's a part of our politics and you know, everything in that sense.1:15 You know, like you see in um the UK, people are now being arrested for things that they say on social media, and it's like I feel like if we continue to go down this censorship road, we could end up in a place where you post something controversial on social media, and twelve hours later you have the police knocking at your door to arrest you and charge you with some sort of um crime, you know.1:38 And so I think it's important, you know, considering the Jimmy Kimmel show getting pulled off the air, to take into account the Tucker Carlson incident, you know.1:46 It it happens on both sides.1:48 Um, you know, Tuckle Carlson and Fox News had a huge fallout, and I think it's just important to understand um, you know, like there are um false things going on in the media, but I don't necessarily think that it's up to the corporations to decide what is true and what should be given to the people.2:08 I think people should be intelligent enough and do their research about things to the point where they know what they're being told is true or false.2:16 I don't think that it's up to people who might be lobbied and paid and swayed by um corporations and people in power to censor people.2:26 That's just my point.2:26 I'd love for people to give their opinion in the comments.2:29 See you on the next one.
Vansh Patel0:00 Gaines, I think you brought up a very interesting argument with censorship in our media, and I think it's a very touchy subject.0:09 I uh on one hand, I do think censorship is beneficial in some sorts when it comes to let's say possibly children's channels.0:18 I think there should be a form of censorship when it comes to that.0:22 I think kids on social media should have a form of censorship.0:26 But overall, when it comes down to the news source media, I think there should be no forms of censorship.0:33 I think that's a direct violation of our rights as citizens.0:37 But on one hand, you have to open your eyes to the possibility that this is not a violation to your first amendment right of freedom of speech when it comes down to it on these apps, because you are signing their terms and conditions on social media to abide by their rules of not making certain topics present.1:06 Um at the end of the day, it it may be in violation to your rights, but they're allowed to control what is present on their apps, and I it's an unfortunate scenario scenario, but it's something that we just have to abide by.1:25 But I think when it comes down to it on the news sources, I think those should be uncensored.1:34 Uh as they are the most common form of information for almost the entire country.1:41 So I think you made a very valid point.
Wesley Joyce0:00 Yeah, I think uh y'all both bring up very valid um arguments and stances on this.0:06 But one thing that I want to mention is censorship right now, even though Trump was, you know, he's uh he was heavily censored for a long time, um, whether it was for a good reason or for not.0:21 Um during that time, every platform he got was preaching, you know, how censorship is bad.0:30 And it's unfortunate to see um this censorship coming back, because that's not how America should be.0:37 And yes, I agree with you on the kids' channels, but I'm not really talking about kids' channels here.0:41 I'm really referring to people um with more political voices.0:45 But one thing I kind of wanted to touch on here was um in this past Trump election cycle, obviously long-form media like podcasts has started to dominate a lot of how um educated and uneducated people um source their information and hear from some of these candidates.1:04 And I remember when the Trump administration won, a lot of people credited Joe Rogan and his um kind of think tank into supporting him and that being a huge reason why a lot of moderates, as he is a moderate, um, voted for Trump.1:24 But I think an important thing to think of now is if you listen to a Joe Rogan podcast, he is the first one to call out um the censorship and you know, some of the stuff Cash Patel's done with the Epstein files and how things have gone back and forth there.1:41 So one thing that I just wanted to point out is that yes, there is um a push for more censorship right now in our media, unfortunately, on certain debate on certain topics, but um America as a country I feel like is is growing out of listening to what they um you know have to say.2:06 Uh you know, they're they're looking to people like Joe Rogan and and these other these other you know political commentators who stand a little more in the middle, and I think that's great for our country.2:18 So yeah, it is growing, but I think a big aspect of this is people's perception on it and how you know people aren't necessarily just eating up who gets censored and who does what.2:30 They still are to a degree, but um social media is helping um people more moderates agree with each other and helping everybody find common ground a little bit, I believe.
Carl Dagher0:00 Hey Gaines, um I think media censorship is has been a big issue recently.0:05 Um you see initiatives with Elon Musk um and X.0:11 However, I think politically um social media censorship should be out of the picture.0:16 However, when you kind of completely rule out any rules and you have complete free speech on, say, a platform like X to kind of focus on that, um, you see some weird stuff going on there.0:29 And um yes, free speech is valuable in this country.0:34 I mean it's one of the the founding principles that this country was was built on, but to an extent we gotta regulate what is being posted online, in my opinion.0:44 I feel like social media is a very powerful tool, and the media in general is a very powerful tool.0:49 So if someone is putting out some misleading information or falsified information, I think that should be acknowledged.0:57 And also, you know, there I know there's like ways you can filter out kind of explicit content, but I don't think that should be really allowed on the internet in any capacity.1:10 So um it's definitely a a line that people kind of have been crossing here and there, and you know it's a tough subject, like what is complete free speech, but I think the constitution didn't account for social media, so that's something we should reassess this the this day or this day and age.
Owen Patton0:00 Yeah, Gaines, this is a very interesting um topic here.0:04 I think that at the end of the day the media should not be able to censor people as much as they have been able to at the moment.0:12 I think that um certain platforms and things um censor people way too quickly just because they don't agree with what they said or something they said is uh slightly crunk controversial.0:26 And I think this kind of goes against um our freedom of speech that we're guaranteed here in the United States.0:32 I think obviously um when you say thing when you post things like slurs or threats to specific people, um I think those things are very bad.0:42 I do not agree with that, and I think that those people um should be censored by the media, and I think that those instances are like the one thing that you can censor people for.0:52 But I think that even if a topic or a statement is controversial, I think that people have the right to say what they want to say, and that is guaranteed with our freedom of speech here in the United States, and I think that I don't think it was really right for Jimmy Kimmel to be taken off his show for whatever period of time for his comments on um Charlie Kirk's assassination.1:14 And I don't think that the media should be able to censor people um when they say something slightly controversial and it sparks like a little conflict.1:24 I think that that is part of what um being American is.1:30 I think that we should be allowed to speak up and present these topics and even if they're controversial, it may help us get through these conflicts and disagreements by creating um conversations.1:41 So I think that uh the media needs to calm down a little bit with their censorship.
