Should governments regulate social media?

  1. 0:00 Thomas, I think you brought up a very valid concern of the question of where to draw the line uh in the balance of regulation versus the freedom of expression in social media.
  2. 0:14 And when I look at it, I I give it two sides really.
  3. 0:19 I think on one hand you have to realize that this is not a government entity.
  4. 0:25 This is companies that own these platforms.
  5. 0:29 Uh and they technically have the right to regulate their platforms and limit uh what they want shown on their screens and platform.
  6. 0:42 But on the other hand, as widespread and the growth that social media has in this day, I think it's gonna take over all forms of communication if it hasn't already.
  7. 0:56 And I think slowly more and more laws are gonna come into play uh about how the limit of expression is a violation to our First Amendment rights in a way.
  8. 1:10 I think the growth rate social media has that limiting uh expression or viewpoints on the platform will be in violation uh to our rights because I think we have the freedom of speech to express our values, and I think the limitation of that by an app uh or by a company, I think that's unjust.
  9. 1:44 I think that is the company placing priority on their values over ours, and I think that could lead to a load of issues, I think with just bias and other things that it could possibly do.
  10. 2:00 Uh as big as politics are starting to come into social media, I think that's gonna change uh how we run our government in the next couple years.
  11. 2:11 I mean, the elections are being swayed by social media nowadays.
  12. 2:16 Who can campaign the best?
  13. 2:18 Who can reach the most voters?
  14. 2:21 People are trying to reach young voters now.
  15. 2:25 Uh you know, most of the old ones already have their votes set out.
  16. 2:29 They're unlikely to change, but the young voters are the ones that are the most transformative, the ones that are most impressionable.
  17. 2:36 And I think social media is the way to do that.
  18. 2:39 But I think if these companies are limiting certain political views, uh that could potentially lead to some concerns over just the justness of that is is that really fair for a company to limit one side's political expression over another?
  19. 3:03 So I think you brought up a valid argument.
