Gaines Gunn0:00 Okay, so I just went to the bathroom and I wanted to kind of talk about you know what you do after you go to the bathroom.0:12 And this might be kind of a weird topic, I know, but I think it's important because my bathroom was pretty gross, and I live in a community area where we share the bathroom among a lot of people, and I think it's really interesting.0:26 Um I know that there are alternatives like hand sanitizer, for instance, but I know that hand sanitizer is not as effective as washing your hands, and this shouldn't really be a controversy, because a lot of us know intuitively that you should wash your hands after you use the bathroom.0:51 But the marketing campaigns of hand sanitizer and the way that it is projected towards us is that it is a safe and perfectly like it is a perfect alternative to washing your hands, and I just think that is completely false.1:06 And the reason why I think this is because I did a study in high school, um, and it involved Serracea bacteria, which is a common household bacteria, it's found in most showers, most bathrooms around the country, and this this bacteria is pretty dangerous, like most bacteria.1:20 I mean, if it enters your body, it can be pretty dangerous.1:22 Um basically my experiment was I took five samples of this bacteria and I grew it in petri dishes.1:30 I then took five different cleaning devices, um, hand soap, lysol, um, alcohol, and another one, and then um hand sanitizer.1:44 And you know what I found is that hand soap was the most effective.1:50 And maybe it was the brand that I bought.1:52 I don't know.1:52 You can claim that my experiment was flawed, but I really don't think it is.1:58 Um, and you know what?2:00 The only product that did not affect the bacteria, and it was the hand sanitizer.2:06 And that is why I think it's just so important for people to know that yes, hand sanitizer is easier, it's faster, it's more accessible, but it doesn't actually clean you as well as soap does.2:20 Soap, warm water, and washing your hands with soap.2:23 I think that's really important.2:25 I think that a lot of people should know this.2:26 I think that a lot of people would get sick less often if they actually wash their hands, and that is why it is so important, especially among community living, where maybe your bathroom isn't as isn't washed as much, and you can't guarantee that people are gonna treat it kindly, that you should always wash your hands because you will get more sick if you don't, because that is the best way to clean your hands.2:52 Thank you.
Vansh Patel0:00 Gaines, I obviously agree with your point.0:02 I think washing your hands along with other forms of antimicrobials and antibacterials should be um basic necessities when it comes to cleanliness.0:13 But I do disagree in the sense that I think overall um I think washing your hands along with the use of uh antibacterials has been on a rise after COVID.0:29 I think um the introduction of COVID gave um a slight increase in consciousness that people m understood more um just about general safety and general infection.0:46 Um I think after COVID there's been a rise in the use of hand sanitizer along with washing your hands thoroughly and proper methods to um prevention.0:57 Um yeah, I mean I would say after COVID, I think there's been a major increase in not only just the use of um hand sanitizer and other forms of the antibacterials like you mentioned, but I think overall uh the trend seems to be positive in uh cleanliness.1:17 So yeah.
Casey Comerford0:00 Yeah, Gaines, that's um that's a really good point.0:02 Um You know, I think I don't want to I think it's dangerous to say that they're not effective or not a good thing because I do think they are.0:10 I like sometimes if you're in your car or you're out and about, you know, a little thing of hand sanitizer is better than doing nothing, and it will um you know still be effective.0:19 But yeah, I think there is this stigma around um those kind of products, and you know, they put it on their their thing.0:26 They say it kills ninety-nine point nine percent of germs.0:28 Um and the point of that is so that the if you do like get sick or or whatever, if it's not as effective, you can't really be like, oh well, you said it was a hundred percent effective.0:39 It was the fact that they said ninety nine point nine, so that they can say, you know, maybe there's it was that point one.0:44 But in reality, without the warm water, the soap, what the act that you actually get in a bathroom, um, that's not gonna be as effective.0:52 So in reality, it's not 99.9.0:54 And I think that experiment you did is um very interesting.0:58 Um and I don't know, I I think people are washing their hands less and less, I feel like.1:03 Just um, you know, I think it's more it's kind of normalized for people to not wash their hands as often, like just after coming from coming inside after doing whatever outside.1:14 Um so I don't know.
