Tristan Linscott0:00 When I think about how presidents communicate with like the public today and their use of social media, I honestly am kind of torn.0:09 And so this is more of like a little food for thought video.0:12 But personally, I kind of debate this a lot in my head, just like whether or not I feel like it's immature or just a sign of the times, or honestly a good thing.0:23 But first, on one hand, like I don't know, sometimes I struggle with presidents and like people in leadership roles in our country using the same platform that people post memes on and really funny content to like share really important information about like a crisis or like a financial statement or just some thing that really affects a lot of people.0:47 But again, when I say affects a lot of people, then I start to think like, well, maybe the use of social media is good in that aspect because it's reaching a lot of people very fast, and that is something a president has never been able to do before because of the development of social media and this type of communication, and I mean it is kind of the president meeting society where they're at, like if everyone's on social media, obviously the president should probably also be on social media, but then again, like as a teenage girl who's using social media, that being the same platform my president's communicating to me on kind of can be mind boggling.1:28 Um, and I also do see like a lot of the dangers of it because I mean all of us use social media enough to know like how dangerous it is because it is so easy, like impulsivity and just like really high I don't know emotional topics can be like posted online for so many people to see and really hard to erase really fast, and just the type of communication that goes on on the type these type of platforms can sometimes feel a little unprofessional to me just because like I don't know how prof I don't know when you can post this frequently and this much, it does start to be a little bit less professional, and I mean I guess it also does kind of really depend on the user, and so I've really chalked it up to like the user has to use it responsibly and in a way that portrays like confidence and intelligence and like safety and just I don't know, but I feel like moral of the story is I think it can be good and bad, like it is a great way to communicate to a lot of different people really fast and have let us be informed about who's leading us really easily, but I also think that's led to so many people being like misinformed or I don't know, just food for thought.3:08 I think it can be a good or bad thing that the social media uses the president uses social media to communicate with the public, it's just something I've been kind of like thinking about and debating.
Wesley Joyce0:00 Tristan, I think you bring up a lot of great points here, and um it does seem like some of our leadership maybe is meeting society where it's at because um we are you know and a lot of the stuff that they post is very unserious, but a lot of the internet's very unserious.0:13 It is unfortunate when um the chief of the United States is posting AI videos of political opponents um and sombreros when they make complaints about how he's approaching ice, you know, it's kind of like what is that even um it's pretty comical, but that's not a good look.0:33 But something that I think it's important to consider here is um when you learn about Theodore Roosevelt, one of the first things you learn about is the fireside chat and how he would broadcast over the radio and um meet Americans where they were at at that point.0:49 And this was why he was uh a big reason why he was so popular is that people had never had such a personal connection with their president.0:57 Um and it won him a lot of things and it helped him out a lot.1:00 The fireside chats did not go away.1:02 And I don't think you know our government's usage today is nearly as wholesome as the fireside chats that he would broadcast over the radio, but I do think this is just a sign that we're entering a new era because Trump absolutely used social media to his advantage in this past campaign election cycle.1:18 I think he also did so by going on different podcasts.1:21 Um like that's stuff that presidents don't do, but people listen to.1:26 Um, so I think it's definitely a sign that times are changing.1:29 I think uh when we look back at how he won the second election, I think it'll be a case study in um using the same medium as your society.1:37 But yeah, it is very interesting to see.1:39 It's also interesting to see other countries' governments on social media and comparing them to ours.1:43 But yeah.
Daphne Hall0:00 Okay, Tristan, I really like the direction that you're heading with like your topic of social media and political candidates.0:09 Um, I thought you brought up a really interesting point when you discussed how mind-boggling it can be for political candidates to be a part of the platform that everyone else is a part of.0:23 Um, but I do have a question for you and just for the general public on whether we think it's the platform's problem or the political candidates problem.0:30 Um I think that you brought up a really interesting point about how easy it is to just get sucked into that world and really post whatever.0:38 Um but I sometimes wonder about the need to think before we post, um, especially when you're in a you're in political office, or even if you just like have a high up position maybe at a company.0:54 Um but I do agree with you.0:56 I think that it's gotten a little crazy, especially with Twitter.1:00 Um Twitter can get kind of out of hand sometimes.1:03 And so I wonder if really it's about who the person is and how they understand that posting on social media um is out there for the entire world to see.1:16 And I also think that you bring up a good point.1:18 I think this also has to do with verifying um users on media platforms because how much are we verifying people and how do they get verified?1:28 And what is that verification status do for the promotion of their content on these platforms?1:34 And I think that sometimes those who are verified um their content is promoted and is more visible.1:41 Um, so like it increases their visibility for really anyone to see.1:47 And so I think it's a matter of giving the right people the right amount of voice on these platforms and making sure that those who are kind of crazy maybe don't have as much ability to use their voice on these platforms, um, or maybe aren't, or not even use their voice.2:05 They can use their voice, but like maybe we just watch who we're verifying.2:10 And yeah, but I really like this topic that you brought up, Tristan.
