  1. 0:00 What's up y'all?
  2. 0:01 I was walking to the gym right now, enjoying this good weather, and kind of want to talk about how weather impacts your mood for a little bit.
  3. 0:08 Um so there is a science behind the sun making you a happier person.
  4. 0:12 Uh when the sun's out, your brain releases more serotonin, more endorphins, your muscles are more relaxed, and honestly, seasonal depression is a real thing.
  5. 0:22 Uh the weather really has a big impact on your mood.
  6. 0:25 I personally have felt it.
  7. 0:27 Um, and I kinda wanna see what everyone else thinks about this.
  8. 0:30 But for me down the line, knowing these things that there's a scientific reason behind why I feel the way I feel in certain weather conditions.
  9. 0:41 Um I mean I don't think I could ever see myself living in a city like Seattle.
  10. 0:45 You know, it's it's cloudy and rainy every day.
  11. 0:48 And I was really curious to see.
  12. 0:50 I it's something I'm gonna research after this, but um I know the depression levels in the Pacific Northwest are higher than than the average of the United States, but I want to see like productivity and and well-being and and earnings and achievements and all that.
  13. 1:04 I want to compare, say, a sunny area down the coast in California and compare it to Seattle and see what those would be like.
  14. 1:12 But yeah, I know.
  15. 1:13 It's a great day.
  16. 1:14 I hope everyone's enjoying this beautiful weather.
  17. 1:16 Um I think it's good to talk about.
  18. 1:19 And yeah, I think uh place with good weather is is is ideal for me, so yeah.

Casey Comerford

  1. 0:00 Yeah, Carl, all the science behind that is actually very interesting, but just from experiences, I think anyone would tell you that, you know, the sunny days are just you know the best in terms of increasing their mood.
  2. 0:12 Um I live in Atlanta, Georgia, so right now around early fall, you know, middle of October, is you know, probably the best weather we're gonna get all year.
  3. 0:21 This is what I compare our weather to, you know, LA, where it's you know sunny and between 70 and 80 degrees.
  4. 0:28 Um and I can definitely tell for myself um that just on a day-to-day basis, I am just much happier.
  5. 0:35 I don't you know, I don't want to get into you know activity or even like events, I don't feel like my life and everything surrounding has really changed that much.
  6. 0:44 If anything, I feel like right now I'm a little more stressed out in terms of um things I'm working on for my career uh future career as well as school and all that stuff.
  7. 0:53 So um honestly, the fact that I'm dealing with more anxiety now than any other part of the year, but I'm feeling much happier is a direct sign of that.
  8. 1:02 Um it does I think if you just look at tr current trends, you see so many more people flocking down from the north.
  9. 1:09 Um not only because of you know how expensive it's getting up there, but even for people going to college, just flocking down for the weather.
  10. 1:16 Um and you know, it does get really hot down here at points, but I would argue even when it's really hot, um it it you know, when the sun's out, it leads to just more happiness than being in, say you brought up Seattle, but I think even up north where it's just cold and and snowy, that just leads to a lot of frustration.
  11. 1:35 Um and you know, down south we we might get happy when it snows for the first time in a few years, but even then after two days of it snowing, I'm ready to get back to sunny days.
  12. 1:46 Um so yeah, definitely very interesting.

Gaines Gunn

  1. 0:00 Carl, I really like how you take kind of a simple topic like the weather and turn it into something bigger with more implications.
  2. 0:08 And this is actually really interesting to me.
  3. 0:10 This is the the sun actually played a role in where I chose to go to school.
  4. 0:15 So when I was applying to colleges, I was applying all over the country.
  5. 0:18 I applied to 11 schools.
  6. 0:20 But a school that actually I was really interested in was Michigan.
  7. 0:23 And I just realized literally I just realized now that I'm wearing the sweatshirt from Michigan.
  8. 0:30 So it's actually kind of funny and ironic.
  9. 0:33 But yeah, so I was deciding if I even wanted to apply to Michigan, what would happen if I got in, because it's a pretty it's a prestigious school.
  10. 0:42 Um it it would have been a good experience.
  11. 0:45 But you know, during my application, I went and met with my advisor at school, and she said that her daughter went there, and she was like, it is so during the winter it is so cloudy and so like there's so little sun that they actually put red lights in your dorm that like release the same like rays as a sun because you never see the sun from like I don't know what she said, it was like November to May.
  12. 1:13 No, even later, like June.
  13. 1:15 November to June, seven months out of the year, you don't see the sun.
  14. 1:19 And I think that plays a huge role on productivity, like you were saying, because I know for myself, if I don't go out into the sun and soak up some vitamin D and you know, get out of my room and get out of the classroom, I am so much less productive, and I feel so much just grosser.
  15. 1:39 Like I all I want to do is sit around.
  16. 1:41 And so I think this is such a great topic.
  17. 1:43 I I I applaud you for taking something like the sun and sparking a conversation like this.
  18. 1:49 Um yeah, like I I think that we should all agree or all enjoy, I mean, our sunny days a lot more.
  19. 1:57 Um I actually recently, now that's getting a little colder, I enjoy these sunny days even more.
  20. 2:03 Um, and yeah, so that's a great topic, Carl.
  21. 2:06 I appreciate that.

Vansh Patel

  1. 0:00 Carl, I really like how you brought up this point because the sun is a resource that everyone on earth has access to, but most people don't take advantage of.
  2. 0:11 It's something that is out throughout the day that you can easily go outside and sit in the sun and as you mentioned, um become or get some enjoyment from and uh raise your happiness levels.
  3. 0:27 I mean, uh along with happiness, there's other nutritional and health benefits you can get.
  4. 0:32 Vitamin C, often offered by the sun, I mean vitamin D.
  5. 0:36 And uh I think most people just aren't taking advantage of this.
  6. 0:40 And as you mentioned, seasonal depression, I think along with that is teenagers are locking themselves in their rooms, playing video games, things like that, rather than how they used to playing in the sun.
  7. 0:52 And I think that shift has been noticed among data in depression and especially in young teenagers.
  8. 1:00 I think there's been a rise in depression as these new forms of entertainment have taken over control uh over outdoor uh play.
  9. 1:11 And I think along with that is COVID also um wrote the the levels of depression rose during COVID because of the same reasons.
  10. 1:21 People weren't going outside spending time, they were locking themselves indoors, and this isolation really had an effect on a widespread level of mental health across America.
  11. 1:34 So yeah, I think you made an excellent point.
